New chairs to support research in IIT Delhi
The IIT Delhi has established two new chairs to support research activities in the areas of geotechnical & geo-environmental engineering and micro-electronics & VLSI design. Saurabh Mittal, an IIT alumnus, has given these chairs to Professor G.S. The institution is home to Professor Manoj Datta and Visweswaran.
The "Professor G.S. Visweswaran Chair", which aims to encourage excellence and leadership in teaching and research in the area Microelectronics & VLSI Design, and the "Professor Manoj Datta chair" will support and encourage research in Geotechnical & Geo-environmental Engineering.

In 1980, Dr. Visweswaran was a member of the Electrical Engineering Department at IIT Delhi and he retired in 2015. His work in digital and analog mixed-signal circuit design and memory design is well-known. He was also the president of IIT Delhi's board on student welfare and the head of students counselling. Professor Visweswaran was appointed Dean of Student Affairs at IIIT-Delhi after he retired from the workforce. He held this office until July 2017.
Prof Manoj Datta has been associated with IIT Delhi's civil engineering department since 1980. He is currently an Emeritus professor. Professor Manoj Datta is well-known in the field of geotechnical engineering. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award (2017) as well as the Leadership Award (2008) by the Delhi Chapter Indian Geotechnical Society. From 2008 to 2013, he was the Director of Punjab Engineering College (Deemed University), Chandigarh, and from 2004 to 2007, he was Dean (Alumni Affairs & International Programmes at IIT Delhi).
Saurabh Mittal spoke out about the Chairs he had endowed. He said that the impact Professors have on students' lives during their IIT years is more than what they see in the classroom. Our teachers have taught us how to be a successful person. They also teach you the importance of persistence, diligence, and excellence. Their guidance was invaluable during my graduate years. It is an honor to be able endow chairs in their name to support excellence in research in their particular field.
Saurabh Mittal, the founder and chairman of Mission Holdings, focuses on creating strong operating platforms in technology and financial services. Prior to founding Mission Holdings, Mr Mittal worked as a partner at Noonday, an affiliated of Farallon Capital Management, which was one of the largest hedge funds in the world. He was responsible for large private and public investments in areas such as Financial Services, Technology, Media, and Telecom. Mittal was the co-founder of Indiabulls in 1999. He served as Vice Chairman and Co-founder from its inception until 2014. He was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2017 by IIT Delhi for his contributions to Corporate Business Development & Entrepreneurship. (India Science Wire).
