IIT-M launches new programme to boost women leadership

Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has established a new programme to improve its girls leadership using an endowment fund increased by its alumni and CSR grants.

Named 'Girls Leading IITM' (WLI), the programme is likely to create grants annually to accelerate the careers of women technologists and supply a supportive atmosphere for girls to flourish in IIT Madras. The intention is to help accelerate efforts to enhance the amount of women students, faculty, staff and generating chances for achievement. 

The Institute is likely to increase the endowment of US dollars two million from the end of 2021. In the very first year , it is going to be geared to give Rs. 70 lakhs for a variety of initiatives.

The goals of this 'Women top IITM' program will consist of increasing the proportion of women faculty in Assistant Professorships to 20 percent in the present 15%, producing 30% of faculty applications from women applicants and institution of an award for women faculty in direction. The grantees under the programme will be expected to grad to leadership functions within the institute and also eventually become next-generation ambassadors for empowering a gender-balanced Institute.

Elaborating about the vision behind the initiative,'' Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, stated,"IIT Madras has made great progress in the past several decades in raising the proportion of girls in the pupil population, from the undergraduate degree to the doctoral programme. The involvement of girls in the non-teaching team is also quite great, and we're making every attempt to close the gap in the event of faculty. The WLI programme is going to be a potent catalyst to let us decrease the obstacles confronted by women students, staff and faculty at IIT Madras to accomplish their whole potential."

The significant goals of this application would incorporate acceleration of recruitment of women faculty, conduct applications that offer physical and psychological safety for girls, and create opportunities for women faculty and postdoctoral fellowships to perform interdisciplinary work that may yield global research recognition.
