Aster Medcity, Kochi launches cryoablation procedure to tackle heart disease

Two words, "Cryo" and "Ablation," are combined to form cryo-ablation, which means "cold removal." An innovative method to restore a normal heartbeat after disrupting abnormal electrical pathways that lead to stroke and other heart failures is cryoablation. Advanced imaging technology is used to guide the catheter through a blood vessel in the patient's leg and into the heart. A cryo balloon is filled with nitrous oxide gas, which cools the tissue and causes intracardiac ablation lesions to form. Because the treatment uses a low-temperature balloon to carry out the procedure, other cells remain unharmed. Patients can return to their normal routine the following day.

At Aster Medcity, Kochi, the first cryo-ablation was performed on a 53-year-old woman from Valanchari, Malappuram, whose heart was beating abnormally and water was accumulating in her chest. It was determined that Cryo-ablation would be the most effective treatment for the patient's current condition, as well as his or her risk of developing the condition in the future.

Compared to other heart surgeries, this procedure is painless and completely safe," said Dr. Praveen Sreekumar, a Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at Aster Medicity, Kochi. For the most part, patients won't need to take any medication after undergoing this cutting-edge procedure. Patients who have an accurate diagnosis at an early stage of the disease are less likely to relapse,"

Arrhythmia patients who have abnormal heartbeats are treated with cryo-ablation. When the heart's nerves malfunction, an irregular heartbeat results. If left untreated for a long period of time, this condition can lead to dangerous strokes and other heart-related health issues. These patients are usually prescribed blood thinners; in more severe cases, treatments such as pacemakers may be recommended, but this is not a long-term solution. This new treatment option stands out from the rest of the options available.

"Aster Medicity is one of the few centres in the country and the only hospital in South Kerala to successfully introduce Cryoablation therapy," explains Dr. Anil Kumar, Head of the Department of Cardiology at Aster Medicity, Kochi. Patients with heart disease are scheduled to undergo cryoablation surgery in our state at a lower cost than in neighbouring states.

About 10% of patients over the age of 80 have atrial fibrillation (AF). Even among young people, these conditions are becoming more commonplace. Other symptoms of arrhythmia include chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, fainting, and a feeling of dizziness. An early onset and progressive deterioration are both possible outcomes of this condition over time.
