24 Mantra Organic sees pandemic propelling focus on organic foods for immunity
The Covid-19 pandemic has transformed the perspective of organic foods, focusing on safety and healthful diet to build a strong immune system.
Among the many healthy eating options, organic food is viewed as the best. According to N Balasubramanian, CEO of 24 Mantra Organic, organic food sales have risen since the pandemic began. He stressed that eating organic was a tradition, not a fad.
“Food consumption trends have shown remarkable patterns in recent years. From home cooking to cosmopolitan cuisines. However, the abrupt start of the pandemic has forced many to change their eating patterns. The old fashioned home cooking and grandmother's recipes have made it into the kitchen. This is viewed as being for the elite,” he said.
Organic also refers to the method of production of specific foods. Rice, lentils, fruits, vegetables, eggs, and meat are grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilisers. Organic farmers do not use GMOs, antibiotics, or growth hormones. Organic farming uses insects, birds, and traps to control pests and diseases.
In studies comparing organic versus non-organic foods, results were mixed. Organic foods may be more nutritious due to antioxidants, lack of hazardous chemicals, pesticides and fertilisers, better taste, and stronger immune system.
Organic foods tend to be higher in antioxidants and micronutrients like vitamin C, zinc, and iron. He cited a study to support the idea that organic fruits, vegetables, and cereals deliver more antioxidants. Organic crops produce more natural pesticides than non-organic ones.
Organic food is rich in nutrients since it is free of synthetic chemicals, pesticides, and fertilisers. “It tastes better than its regular cousin. Organic food contributes to the planet's sustainability and ecological balance. “More significantly, the food is safe, wholesome, and pure,” Balasubramanian told FnB News.
Organic foods have a better taste since they are developed using non-GMO seeds and in natural and environmentally sustainable ways. But organic foods are unaltered, reducing the risk of immune system degeneration. Organic foods contain increased vitamin and mineral content, which helps boost the immune system. So organic food is better. This is because the earth is more fertile. According to him, this improves soil fertility, reduces pollution, and protects the environment.
“Genetic engineering of products is a major concern today. Inorganic organ damage and digestive tract thickening are caused by GMO meals, he said.
